9:10 am - 9:50 am Leveraging Automation to Increase Efficiency of Development and Security within the Finance Industry

Establishing and maturing DevOps within the finance sector can be challenging. Large financial institutions are often highly siloes, weighed down with legacy systems and technical debt and bound by heavy compliance. In this session Sathi will draw on his extensive experience with DevOps in finance industry to share:

  • The automation journey within a leading financial institution and moving from developers operating on individual mac books to a centralised service with DevOps
  • Introducing automation to be able able to create an application in under 25 minutes, including shielding
  • Banks hits and misses in effectively embracing and leveraging on DevOps to increase agility, break Silos and improve efficiencies.
  • Making the business case for DevOps and obtaining buy-in from top management

9:50 am - 10:30 am Utilising DevOps to Bring Siloed Teams Together and Enhance Productivity

To enable the ACT government to leverage data in making more informed policy decisions the Data and Analytics Centre built a cloud based data analytics platform. The 1st attempt to build a platform took 15 months, but after adopting a DevOps way of working an effective platform was produced in just 16 weeks. In this session Ole shares this journey:

  • The initial situation which need be overcome: 4 siloes, many emails, confusion and very little progress
  • How using two week sprints and DevOps brought siloed teams together and created a happier, more engaged workforce
  • The importance of utilizing build automation to facilitate agility and reliability

10:30 am - 11:00 am Speed Networking

11:00 am - 11:30 am Morning tea

11:30 am - 12:10 pm Leveraging DevOps to Bring Product Design Closer to Technology and Digitally Transform the Organisation

1.5 years ago Vector embarked on a bold digital transformation agenda. Introducing DevOps at Vector is a means to overhauling IT, enhancing agility within the business and ultimately enable the business to evolve at a time when the energy sector is being heavily disturbed. In January Vector passed a significant milestone; going live with the first system that will be fully maintained by the people that built it. In this session, the company’s first DevOps practitioner and Digital Architect, Rob, will share the biggest challenges and how they’ve headway into overcoming these:

  • Hiring developers and training them in- house to test to build a strong test driven development culture
  • Managing existing vendor contractual arrangements which were antiquated with DevOps practice by bringing vendors along on the DevOps journey and leveraging automated testing to keep vendors accountable
  • Ensuring quality of products was high through navigating shortages in product owners, creating truly cross functional teams and defining business criteria

12:10 pm - 12:50 pm Moving to Containers to Enhance Developer Flexibility

Following a 5 year journey with DevOps which has enabled Xero to scale start-up like agility while rapidly growing, Xero are now moving to container based architecture. In this session:

  • Streamlining the containerization process by approaching it as a BAU task; starting in smaller teams and developing necessary capabilities in the process
  • Containers aren’t for everything- where and how containers will be implemented
  • Overcoming the challenges of moving to containers as a windows shop

1:50 pm - 2:30 pm Unlocking Efficiency through DevSecOps at Healthdirect

Having been on the DevOps journey for 5 years, Healthdirect Technology now direct their attention to streamlining the cumbersome compliance process for architectural changes. This improvement will mean the organization can continue to do more with diminishing resources and pour valuable resources into its customer features rather than lengthy compliance processes. In this session Bruce will share:

  • How Healthdirect has generated efficiencies and is improving product quality by building controls into the pipeline one by one
  • Adapting the security framework supplied by AWS professional services to make it fit for purpose
  • Enabling teams to better manage their features and servers by deploying Google’s error budget

2:30 pm - 3:10 pm Panel Discussion- Serverless vs Server vs Microserver

Going serverless is becoming increasingly popular, with tech giants like Netflix proving it’s capability to improve efficiency and security. However, as with every technology advancement, its value is diminished if not implemented in the right context. In this session panellists will discuss the merits of servers/ serverless and microservers and their experiences with each:

  • Servers are still a requirement in some environments, what advice would you give for operating in a hybrid set-up?
  • How do you overcome the challenges associated with setting up for serverless?
  • Are microservers delivering the benefits that their aficionados would have us believe they do?
  • In terms of serverless, what separates the providers?

3:10 pm - 3:40 pm Afternoon tea

3:40 pm - 4:20 pm Building Enterprise Level Performance Testing to Enhance Resilience

Following a significant network issue in 2018 Optus set out to put the right tools in place which would prevent similar incidents in future. The result was the production of Tankswarm and Artillery; self scaling performance testing tools which are now available to the public. In this session:

  • Utilising Docker and Kubernetes to create self- scaling capabilities
  • Building agnostic tools (through APIs, Bamboo, Jenkins) which could be used by all
  • How DevOps enabled optus to make 30-50 major changes in one week, following the incident

Interactive Discussion Group

In this session you will have the opportunity to deep dive into two of the following topics. Each 30 minute session will be led by a subject matter expert- who will facilitate an opportunity to compare and contrast your experiences and thoughts with a small group of your peers.

IDG One

3:20 pm - 4:00 pm How to Lead A Successful Devops Implementation From The Bottom Up
Although transitioning to DevOps tools and practice with exec endorsement is preferable, it is not always possible. Join this discussion to discuss strategies for transitioning successfully without the desired level of organisational support.

IDG Two

3:20 pm - 4:00 pm Serverless Computing and The Rise of No-Ops
Serverless computing has many advantages, chiefly allowing developers to focus solely on coding and ultimately producing a higher quality product. Join this discussion to assess the benefits and challenges of serverless and it’s suitability to your environment.

IDG Three

3:20 pm - 4:00 pm Utilising DevOps to Improve GDPR Compliance
Companies operating internationally are now bound by the GDPR, which makes effective consumer data protection and management crucial. Join this discussion to hear more about leveraging DevOps to better protect customer data.

4:00 pm - 4:10 pm Closing Remarks from Conference Chairperson
